English Language with Film Studies BA (Hons)
During this course you will spend two-thirds of your time studying English Language and one-third studying Film Studies.
English is an important language socially, politically and economically. Today it is a global language, with an estimated 1.5 billion speakers worldwide. English is the best-described language in the world and by studying for a BA in this field you can become proficient in understanding how English works, why and how it is used, where it has come from, as well as gaining knowledge in linguistic study.
You will get the chance to learn about subjects like the grammatical structure of English (word order, sounds, vocabulary, meaning and so on), the history of English, English dialects and social variation, English in society, English in education, cultural aspects of English, global English, and more.
You will also undertake modules to develop your understanding of the areas of general linguistics which are required to study the linguistics of English. Depending on which modules you choose, this could include topics like child language acquisition, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, bilingualism and multilingualism, languages in contact, historical change, and other subjects based on the expertise of our teaching staff.
Our Film Studies degree combines critical and creative work and practice, depending on your interests and career plans. At Bangor, we are committed to teaching in small groups and to the majority of our modules being delivered through weekly workshops and seminars.
Lecturers who teach on the Film Studies degree have a range of interests including American Cinema, British and European film, Japanese and other world cinemas, gender, visual culture, film analysis, the body and film, film and history, digital technology and film, scriptwriting and screenwriting, film-making, media and film in Wales, acting and performing, language and film, blogging and podcasting, computer games and film, film stars and film on television. Our Film Studies lecturers have recently written books and articles on topics such as Cult Film, American Culture and Film, Cinema and Medicine, Jewish Film, Surrealist Film, Cinema and Landscape, Australian Film, and the new technologies of film viewing.

A degree in English Language and/or Linguistics will increase your knowledge of language structure and use for communicative purposes, the history of the English language, the role of English in the world and your competence in the grammatical structure and use of the English language. Recent graduates have gone on to do further academic study such as the PGCE and postgraduate qualifications leading to speech and language therapy, overseas teaching, and other training in order to pursue careers in social work, police work, immigration work, local government, banking and accountancy, librarianship, media and journalism, creative writing and publishing.
Employability and Linguistics and English Language degrees
A degree in Linguistics and English Language equips you with knowledge and skills which will open many doors for you when choosing a career.
- Our modules in Child Language Acquisition, Speech and Language Disorders offer a good foundation for those who wish to pursue postgraduate training in speech and language therapy in order to qualify as a speech and language therapist.
- Our modules on English Grammar and Child Language Acquisition offer a good foundation for those who wish to pursue a PGCE (teacher training qualification).
- Modules in Teaching English as a foreign Language are invaluable for those who wish to teach English overseas.
However, some English Language/Linguistics graduates, as with most other Arts graduates follow a career path that's not directly related to their degree.
Linguistics and English Language graduates have gone on to work in following fields: accountancy, librarianship, the police force, teaching English as a foreign language, or have gone on to further postgraduate study, teacher training or other training such as diploma in social work or postgraduate training for speech and language therapy.
Employability and Creative Studies and Media degrees
Creative Studies and Media courses offer a number of career paths for you to choose from once you graduate. They emphasise the importance of creative exploration, and actual university-level critical understanding. These things - the ability to be creatively adaptable, consider the tools at hand and apply creative thinking, the importance of innovation and a combination of practical and critical knowledge - make Creative Studies and Media graduates ideal employees or, indeed, creative entrepreneurs in their own businesses.
Creative Studies and Media courses have seen graduates involved in both academe and in industry, including work in:
- Creative Writing, Professional Writing and Publishing;
- Performance and the Theatre, both on and behind the stage;
- Print and/or Broadcast Journalism;
- Actors, presenters and in television programme production;
- Advertising and the Marketing industries;
- Radio, as presenters, as well as in programme production;
- Digital, Web and New Media production;
- Multi-media industries.
A number of graduates have likewise continued to Postgraduate study.
Some have followed careers in teaching, lecturing, politics and public relations.
