Karjeros galimybės

This course is closely linked to the needs of potential employers including those in the automotive, aerospace, medical and power generation industries. So it’s no surprise that the large majority of our newly employed graduates are in graduate level jobs.

Engineering graduates can soon be earning between £20,000 and £30,000 a year. Our engineering and technology courses help you take up these rewarding opportunities. Data from Unistats in 2012 show that, six months after graduating, around two out of three of our graduates with jobs are classed as ‘engineering professionals’.

Teaching at Sunderland is kept fully up-to-date through our strong links with industry, including regional manufacturing giants such as Nissan. Teaching is further enriched by our research into areas such as automotive mechatronics, control engineering materials and structural analysis, manufacturing systems and advanced maintenance.

Sunderland has excellent facilities including laboratories for electronics, robotics and programmable logic controllers. We also have workshops and advanced modelling software that is the latest industry standard.

We encourage all our students to undertake a year-long placement between the second and final years, although it is not compulsory. It’s a great opportunity to get paid to put your learning into practice and to extend your experience.

Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) logo‌This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as partially fulfilling the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Accreditation is an assurance that our courses meet the standards set by the Engineering Council. This is the highest level attainable for any undergraduate programme. As well as increased employment potential, graduates from an accredited programme are typically able to fast track the process of achieving CEng status.

Engineering scholarship

£1000 engineering scholarships are available for this course. For more information and to see the eligibility criteria, please see the Student Achievement Reward (StAR) bursaries page of the Faculty of Applied Sciences website.

Employment & careers

Watch Engineering graduates Stuart Dunn and Chris Kirton talk about the support offered by our Careers and Employability Service:

Sunderland has a good reputation with employers. 85% of engineering and technology graduates enter employment or further study within six months. (Source: Unistats 2012).

Many major blue chip employers are finding it hard to recruit engineering graduates with the right mix of skills and experience. Our course is designed to help you meet their needs and launch yourself into a rewarding career.

Placements

To further enhance employability we encourage you to undertake a 48-week placement between your second and final year. It effectively becomes a third year of a four year course. Placements are paid, with an average salary of £14,000-£18,000 a year depending on your location.

Placements are an excellent opportunity to put your learning into practice and understand the context for your new knowledge. The contacts made during placements can also be valuable for future job offers.

Study Abroad

You have the opportunity to study in another country for one or two semesters during the second year. You can choose from over 150 universities in 20 countries, either English-speaking (such as Australia, Canada and the USA) or non English-speaking (such as Argentina, Brazil and Japan).

With employers increasingly looking for a flexible and internationally-minded workforce, it’s a great way to enhance your CV and stretch your horizons.

University Language Scheme

It is usually possible to take a module from the free University Language Scheme, which will earn credits towards your degree. The language module can be taken on top of or as part of the 120 credits needed to complete a year.

Language skills increase your international mobility and you can choose between French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese at a range of levels. If your first language is not English, please check with your tutor about entry requirements.

Enterprise and entrepreneurship

The University's Enterprise Team helps our students turn business ideas into reality. Throughout the year they run events and competitions such as the annual Blueprint Business Planning Competition.

The University also offers business incubators and prestigious yet affordable office space at St Peter’s Gate. These are all linked into our campus and offer excellent support and networking opportunities.
