he Economics and Management undergraduate degree provides a deep understanding of how the economy and corporations function, how resources are allocated and how incentives are aligned between shareholders, managers and employees. Economics examines how consumers, firms and governments make decisions which eventually determine the allocation of resources and output growth. Management is concerned with the organisation and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. In the final year, students will have the opportunity to choose from a range of management courses such as Entrepreneurship and Small Business Ventures, International Marketing and Strategic Management, along with specialist courses in economics.

Aims

  • This course aims to produce high quality graduates with the analytical and practical skills necessary to understand and deal creatively with a range of economic, financial and management issues.
  • The degree will appeal in particular to economists who would like a career in management.

  • Brandos atestatas – jei jau esi baigęs mokyklą, išrašo nereikia, užtenka prie Kastu stojimo anketos prisegti savo Brandos atestatą.

Dėmesio!Konkrečius programos stojimo reikalavimus gali rasti programos aprašyme universiteto tinklapyje. Employability

Economics plays a crucial role in the operation, management and regulation of financial institutions, industry and government agencies. As a senior manager in public and private enterprise, a knowledge of economics significantly enhances strategic decision making, efficient resource allocation, cost saving implementation and sustainable management. Further, such knowledge is crucial in a world of integrating global markets and the information superhighway. The aim of our teaching is to give students 'employable knowledge'.

Economics graduates from Brunel have an excellent employment record and go into a wide variety of occupations. Some go on to further study and become professional economists or accountants. Others are employed in industry, the financial sector or government. In some cases, a job offer comes from a former work placement employer.

In a recent LinkedIn Survey Brunel's Economics and Finance Department was reated in the top 25 of UK undergraduate universities having graduates in desirable finance jobs.

The following statistics relate to graduates who studied Economics, Economics and Accounting, Business Economics and Finance and Accounting. Accountancy is a popular career choice with Finance and Accounting students. Chartered Accountancy training contracts within the banking sector and the top tier accountancy firms tend to be top of the list, and a number of this year’s graduates were successful in this area. ACCA and CIMA are also popular Accountancy qualifications with graduates interested in Trainee Accountants or other Accountancy roles. Tax and Treasury are two other areas entered as well as Finance Analyst roles.

Many Economist jobs require a higher degree, and the number of organisations employing Economists in the UK is small, so graduates from Economics and Business Finance degrees tend to aim for the professional business sector, with particular interest in Finance. A typical entry level role is that of an Analyst and graduates from this year’s cohort entered roles such as Finance or Data Analyst.

Which jobs do they do?

  • • Assistant Economist •  Compliance Associate •  Data Analyst •  Financial Analyst •  Merchandise Analyst •  Operations Analyst •  Paraplanner •  Project Analyst •  Regulatory Risk Analyst •  Risk Analyst •  Trainee Accountant

What do they study?

  • • ACCA •  MA Global Finance •  MSc Emerging Economies & International Development •  MSc Finance & Investment •  MSc International Securities, Investment & Banking •  PGCE Primary Education

The positive impact of a sandwich placement on graduate employment outcomes across Brunel is considerable. Those who have done placements are also much more likely to be in employment for which their degree was a formal requirement or where they believe their degree gave them a competitive advantage in recruitment.

Placement leavers from Economics and Finance experienced the following outcomes:

  • 100% progressed into employment or further study
  • The average starting salary was £24,583

The graduate labour market remains competitive and relevant experience is increasingly required for graduate level jobs. For those without related experience job search strategy is often about getting a ‘foot in the door’ in order to compete for graduate positions later. As a result many Economics and Finance graduates were working in occupations such as Finance or Accounts Assistant/Intern in order to gain the experience required.

A growing national trend is for many students to delay their job applications until completing their studies, preferring to focus on achieving the highest grade possible. This can result in some graduates initially continuing with their part-time job while they explore their options after graduating. As a result some graduates were working in non-graduate level positions including sales, customer service and administrative occupations.

The DLHE survey provides a snapshot of a very short amount of time (six months) after graduating and while many have progressed into relevant graduate jobs others are taking time out, travelling, waiting to start a course or continuing with their part-time job while they explore their options after graduating. Many graduates have moved on in their careers since completing the questionnaire.
