The Master's programme in Human Geography addresses the relationship between human activities and their spatial environment in a number of topical fields. It takes a critical, emancipatory approach to the field by engaging with the less privileged in society, but also trying to contribute to positive change and development in many different fields. Within the Master's Human Geography, you have a choice between four important Master's specialisations, as well as the option to add to this with an Educational Master.
Specialisations

Conflict, Territories and Identities. How do we make sense of conflict and in/security? What are the causes that spark violence and war? And how are war, terrorism and in/security framed and what shapes do they take in practice at local, regional, national and international levels? How do territorial and identity issues shape and are shaped by conflict, violence and insecurity?

Capital, Labour and Extraction. In this specialisation we explore the key challenges produced by contemporary capitalism: stagnant economic growth; rising debt; geographical inequalities; housing, labour, and resource scarcity; and climate crisis. We ask whether these challenges are endemic to capitalism? How do they unevenly impact different peoples and places? And how can we best tackle them and build more just economies?

Borders, Migration and Justice. In this specialisation we explore the influence of geopolitics and persistence of global injustices for present day human mobility across the globe. This implies paying attention to processes of colonial and post-colonial arrangements around borders, it calls for a comprehensive epistemology of the impact which policy has on mobility perspectives, and it requires critical empirical approaches to these dynamics that take all actors, migrants included, on board.

Cities, Culture and Inequality. In this specialisation, we explore how cities are represented, contested and experienced by a wide array of urban dwellers. You will learn how to think about city life and urban inequalities from different scales and perspectives; from the edge to the core, and with urban theory and (creative) methodologies.
