In this Master’s programme, we aim to balance ‘hardcore’ and engineering physics.

Applied Physics is all about understanding the fundamental laws of the physical world and finding ways to apply those laws in technical solutions. Applied Physicists use scientific principles to create or improve practical devices and systems and to contribute to many other fields. A great deal of the work done by physicists is not immediately visible. But without recent breakthroughs in physics, the mobile phone and the laptop would have been power-guzzling machines that weigh a ton and lab-on-a-chip technology would still be science fiction.

In this Master’s programme, we aim to balance ‘hardcore’ and engineering physics. Research is spread out over clusters, which together reflect essential real-world needs.

Specialisations
  • Physics of Fluids
  • Quantum Physics
  • Nano Electronic Materials
  • Applied Nanophotonics
  • Soft Matter
  • Materials Science & Engineering
  • Energy, Materials & Systems

In the first year of this Master’s programme you will take five courses related to physics theory, mathematical and computational techniques, applied physics, experimental physics and also ethical and cultural awareness. Together these compulsory courses cover the entire scope of the programme.

The second year is the practical year. You can now choose to focus on fundamental science, e.g. by joining a research group or doing an internship at a research institute abroad. On the other hand, you can also opt for a more engineering driven approach to research, combined with an internship in industry or within a company either in the Netherlands or abroad. The internship takes up approximately one third of your second year. If you want, the programme allows you to extend your internship to five months.

As an applied physicist graduate of the University of Twente you will have many different career choices. Our students normally find a job within a few months of graduation.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Approximately half of our graduates work in Research & Development departments at a university, research institute or centre of expertise (e.g. TNO, ECN, CERN) or at a corporate Research & Development department (e.g. Philips Natlab, Shell, Océ), developing new materials, new technology, or new products, for example for space travel or medical science.

PHD PROGRAMME

Many Applied Physics graduates pursue their scientific studies at doctorate level, conducting independent research for four years under the guidance of a professor, and writing and defending a PhD dissertation. You can pursue a PhD at the University of Twente or at any other university in The Netherlands or abroad.

ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING

Some graduates pursue a career in engineering or manufacturing. In engineering, you design new products or production processes, working for a major company or as an independent adviser. In manufacturing, the focus is on innovations in the production process.

MANAGEMENT

Twenty per cent of our graduates work at management level. Some head corporate Research & Development departments, while others are production managers or general managers.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

Applied Physics graduates regularly pursue careers in information technology. In addition, consultancy firms (e.g. Arthur D. Little, McKinsey) regularly hire applied physicists. Over ten percent of our graduates currently work abroad.
