This course aims at providing you with a detailed knowledge of the main ideas, concepts and principles of economic analysis as they prove relevant to the behaviour of individuals, businesses, institutions and governments. The necessary analytical, quantitative, communication, and information technology skills will be developed in a process that is expected to enable you to apply those skills in real life situations by modelling economic relations and interpreting economic policies and business behaviour. It is designed based on four pillars of knowledge and skills that will prepare you for employment or continuation of your studies at the postgraduate level. In either case this course aims to prepare you for life.

Your overall achievement of generic knowledge and skills is identified in four areas: Enquiry, Contextual Understanding, Collaboration, and Enterprise. This course has been developed in a way that it will increase your employability by encouraging intellectual development, systemic thinking, critical ability and accurate problem identification as well as presentation and team working skills. It will prepare you for a wide range of careers in both the private and the public sector, whereas it will also develop your ability to continue your studies.

Enhancing your employability

The teaching you will experience represents the University of Bedfordshire Business Schools commitment to practice based education which is provided to our students while maintaining the high academic standards that underpin the transformation of a student to a knowledgeable, well informed individual and a valuable asset for every business or institution.

The Business POD is an integrated, project based unit which will set Economics in the context of the business world and will give you the chance to work with your peers in other business-related courses. You will face questions asked by our business partners, often real questions they want to get answered.

Practice weeks: each year you have three practice weeks where the whole timetable focuses on the application of Economics to real life situations as well as on to how to secure a position in the labour market. Institutional or company visits, guest lectures and talks, one to one advice on developing a good CV, and an assessment centre exercise at the end of the course will be vital in preparing you for entering the workplace.

Final Year Project: This will be your opportunity to show the creativity and independence required in the work place. With all the support needed from your tutors, you will have to act as an independent analyst or consultant in identifying an area in Economics which you believe needs further investigation, familiarize yourselves with the relevant literature and use your skills and knowledge to thoroughly investigate in order to provide suggestions and recommendations. Besides being one of the most enjoyable experiences during your course of study, the final year project is also a very useful task which will demonstrate to potential employers your ability to start and finish an independent piece of work yourselves, something that is considered an invaluable skill in todays business world.
