About the course

Understanding how criminal justice works as a system will enable you to think critically about the genesis of crime, its effects on society and the most effective strategies to fight against it. The course brings the substantive (statutory/written law) and procedural (the 'machinery' to enforce) criminal law together into one programme.

There are two options available to students wishing to undertake the LLB with a specialisation in criminal justice:

  • LLB Law with Criminal Justice (three years full-time)
  • LLB Law with Criminal Justice (Professional Placement) (four years) - this includes a one-year work placement in law-related work. Previous placements have been in solicitors' firms, barristers' chambers, governmental institutions and related organisations.

LLB Law with Criminal Justice fulfils all the requirements of the traditional LLB degree, giving graduates qualifying law degree status. They gain the competitive advantage of a specialised knowledge in the area of criminal law and criminal justice.

To ensure that students possess a solid foundation and gain the most comprehensive understanding of criminal justice, in the first year of the programme they are introduced to the Criminal Justice System in conjunction with substantive criminal law. This allows them to put substantive criminal law into its procedural, institutional and cultural context.

Study requirements:

  • The foundation/qualifying law degree, first and second year modules, prepare students for an indepth examination of criminal justice in the final year of the programme, during which they are required to study at least two criminal law/criminal justice related modules.
  • Students must choose at least two criminal justice related modules from those available in any particular year. Modules offered in previous years have included:
    • Criminology
    • Sentencing and Punishment
    • Criminal Evidence and International Human Rights.

Students may choose all the criminal justice related modules offered in that year, if they wish. Alternatively they may choose up to two other modules.

Aims

The LLB provides students with an opportunity to earn a qualifying law degree and develop a dynamic perspective of English law.

LLB Law with Criminal Justice is designed to give students a thorough knowledge and understanding of:

  • how crime is created, its effects on society and the role of modern criminal justice institutions.
  • the most effective strategies to tackle crime, the ways in which criminality affects the public interest and how the fight against criminality may impact upon individual rights.
  • how to apply relevant substantive and procedural law and demonstrate relevant career skills, especially skills pertinent to criminal justice professions.

  • Brandos atestatas – jei jau esi baigęs mokyklą, išrašo nereikia, užtenka prie Kastu stojimo anketos prisegti savo Brandos atestatą.

Dėmesio!Konkrečius programos stojimo reikalavimus gali rasti programos aprašyme universiteto tinklapyje. Spausk šiek tiek aukščiau esantį mygtuką Oficiali svetainė, tuomet dešinėje pusėje esančoje meniu juostoje pasirink skiltį Entry requirements ir po Entry Criteria 2017/18 sąrašu esančiame International and EU Entry Requirements pasirink Lithuania. Tuomet pamatysi stojimo reikalavimus.

Pavyzdys.: Jeigu stojimo reikalavimuose parašyta: Average of Grade 9 and 90% in State Examinations in subjects if they are specified in GCE A-level entry requirements. You can find the GCE A-level entry subjects above. If no subjects are specified at GCE A-level then required State exams can be in any subjects.

Employability

84 per cent of our LLB Law graduates are in employment or further study. While most progress into the legal profession, some students opt to study law as a first degree as a foundation for careers in the corporate world, government or international relations-related professions. Graduates can take advantage of the professional exemptions available with a Brunel Law Degree, and train to become barristers or solicitors.

Regular career events for law students are offered by the University's award-wining Professional Development Centre (PDC).The PDC will provide students in the LLB Law with Criminal Justice programme with specialist guidance and support with a view to (but without any guarantees) securing students placements, mini pupillages and training contract/ pupillage interviews in the area of criminal law and criminal justice, and with a view to making it possible (but without any guarantee) for graduates to follow career paths within relevant criminal justice institutions such as the Crown Prosecution Service, the Probation Service and the Police.

The Legal Skills and Method study block at Level 1 introduces students to fundamental career skills, such as writing a CV and performing well in interviews. Students are also offered a range of master classes, workshops and training opportunities. The Legal Professionals Master Class (short course) gives students the chance to further enhancement such skills.

Careers

Opportunities for law graduates arise in a wide range of activities. You may take advantage of your professional exemptions and train to become a barrister or solicitor, but your degree could take you into careers other than law, including mediation, consultancy, industry, commerce, public administration, the social services, management and humanitarian aid.

Work Placements

Students on the LLB Law with Criminal Justice (Professional Placement) will spend a year working in industry where they gain valuable experience. We are one of only a few UK law schools that offer this unique opportunity as a part of the degree programme.

Most placements are with firms of solicitors, in the courts and the Crown Prosecution Service, and in the legal departments of commercial organisations, government departments and local councils.

Students on the four-year placement programme graduate with a degree from a respected law school, a most distinct CV and excellent links with legal practitioners.

The four-year route can also reduce the time required to become a solicitor after graduation, since the Law Society may credit your work experience against the solicitors' two year traineeship requirement.

The sandwich course also gives you valuable contacts for securing traineeships.

At Brunel we provide many opportunities and experiences within your degree programme and beyond – work-based learning, professional support services, volunteering, mentoring, sports, arts, clubs, societies, and much, much more – and we encourage you to make the most of them, so that you can make the most of yourself.
