We all hear new technical buzzwords and acronyms all the time: Wi-Fi, SATNAV, GPRS, 3G, LANs, Blackberry . . . but what are all these things? Find out by studying Mobile Communications Engineering - one of the fastest moving and most exciting fields of engineering. It has brought about a technological age all of its own, where you can watch video clips on your iPod or mobile; internet and email access is a menu button away on your mobile phone, and in-car satellite navigation (SATNAV) systems can map a route and direct you through the traffic.

By choosing to study at the School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences you will have access to some of the best Radio Frequency (RF) and microwave facilities in the UK. We have recently opened three new laboratories, sponsored by Agilent Technologies, which allow us to follow all stages of RF circuit design from circuit simulation, through layout to experimental testing.

Students on this programme will learn about wireless networks, mobile systems communications, and network technology, as well as undertaking a project that will focus on their main area of interest. Graduates of this programme will have developed the necessary skills and knowledge to take up a range of roles within this exciting industry.

As well as gaining the specialist knowledge and skills required to work in the mobile communications sector, graduates will be able to:
  • Communicate effectively in a written and oral manner
  • Manipulate and present data in a variety of forms
  • Use scientific principles to design broad ranging systems
  • View problems from a wide perspective
  • Use IT tools effectively
  • Manage time and resources efficiently
  • Work effectively as a team member and as an individual
  • Appreciate the need for life long learning and continuous professional development.

  • IELTS - 6.0

  • TOEFL - 80

The programme will provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to take up roles within the mobile communications industry as Professional Engineers. Strong practical and design skills, together with the ability to apply existing and emerging technology in the mobile communications environment will make graduates of this course very attractive to employers in this sector.

Prospects for graduates in the IT sector as a whole are bright, with the Association of Graduate Recruiters’ (AGR) Graduate Recruitment Survey 2007 – Winter Review finding that although IT vacancies are forecast to rise by 16 percent in 2007, the sector is currently suffering from a skills shortage. Graduates from this course may find themselves with a number of job opportunities available to them, with starting salaries reflecting employers’ need to attract the best candidates.
