In contrast to pure math or engineering the Bachelor's program in Econometrics and Operations Research is focused on developing math skills that can be applied to any real-life question. This quantitive program teaches you how to use math to optimize processes, simplify procedures or analyze a set of data.

  • Tilburg University holds excellent international rankings in the fields of economics and econometrics.
  • Researchers and professors in this program are leaders in their field: they have strong expertise in quantitative finance, operations research, quantitative logistics, mathematical economics, and econometric methods.
  • This program is perfect for students who thrive on solving real-life problems by using mathematics and statistics and by logical and analytical thinking. The 'Improving Society Lab', which runs alongside your program in years 1 and 2, gives you the unique opportunity to see practical applications of Econometrics from the start.
  • This is your ticket to one of our Master’s programs with excellent career perspectives: the majority of our students progresses to a Master’s degree, and many of them find a job in their field, even before graduation.

Plenty of jobs at graduation

A great strength of the Econometrics and Operations Research program is that all graduates are able to find jobs shortly after or even before graduating from their Master’s program.

Your specialization is your way to determine where your career will start. Graduates from different specializations have pursued successful careers in logistics and the management of multinationals, at banks and insurance companies, in consultancy, and also at research institutes and in science. Many graduates end up as data analysts or data scientists; a career path for which specialists are very much in demand at the moment.

Diversity of careers

The specific careers of our Econometrics graduates may surprise you:

  • Some of our graduates end up working for big insurance companies, where they calculate the most optimal insurance rate.
  • Another common field of employment is transportation, in which our graduates optimize processes to minimize costs.
  • You can also find econometrists involved in cancer research, in which they calculate the optimal radiation therapy method which causes the least harm to the body.
  • Econometrists are also found in large-scale research projects to calculate, for example, which dikes should be fortified and which dikes should be increased in height to ensure an optimal relationship between risk of flooding and costs.

As you can see, our program in Econometrics and Operations Research can lead to a wide range of different careers.

Pursue a Master's degree

Most students will pursue a Master’s degree after graduating from their three-year Bachelor’s degree - before starting their career - as is common in the Netherlands. Some students decide to further specialize in the various fields within econometrics, while others decide to apply their extensive knowledge of mathematical models to fields such as data science or data-driven marketing.

With a Bachelor's degree in Econometrics and Operations Research, you have direct access to the following Master's programs:

  • MSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics
  • MSc in Business Analytics and Operations Research
  • MSc in Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science

These Master's programs require extra elective courses or other conditions:

  • MSc International Business Taxation
  • MSc Marketing Analytics
  • MSc Economics
  • Research Master

Of course you can also use the expertise you gained at Tilburg University to apply for Master’s programs at other universities in the Netherlands or at prestigious universities abroad. Some of our graduates have successfully done so in the past.
