Nursing - Child

Our child nursing course is the first step towards a rewarding career, which could take you anywhere in the world and see you working with newborns, toddlers and teenagers. With an equal balance of theory and practice, you’ll graduate as a critical thinker with hands-on experience.

Learn how to care for babies, children and young people on our specialist nursing course.

On this course, you’ll learn how to care for young people from birth up to the age of 18. As a children’s nurse, you’ll need to have a natural rapport with young people so that you can minimise the impact of illness or hospital stays. But of course, you’ll also work closely with parents, carers and relatives – so we’ll focus on communicating effectively and sympathetically with families.

We’ll also explore the impact of environmental, social, cultural and developmental factors on children's health, while considering how parental practices vary and children individual needs.

You’ll learn to co-ordinate and deliver evidence-based care, often working alongside  other health or social care teams, such as voluntary agencies, community groups and statutory bodies.

Our degree course is 50% theory and 50% practice placements. We work in partnership with local NHS trusts and other healthcare organisations, and you’ll be linked to one of our NHS trust partners for your placements.

If you study in Cambridge, you’ll do your placements around Cambridgeshire or West Essex.

If you study in Chelmsford, you’ll do your placements around Essex or North East London.

If you have a preferred location for your placements, we’ll try to take this into account but can’t guarantee it. While on placements, you’ll work shifts and will need to arrange your own transport.

Teaching on campus takes place between 9am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. On placement, you’ll be expected to work shifts. This will include early, late and night shifts, as well as weekends and bank holidays. You’ll have nine weeks’ non-negotiable annual holiday – three weeks in winter, two in spring, and four in summer (which may not coincide with school holidays).

We’re dedicated to the continual improvement of every aspect of healthcare and delivering the values set out in the NHS Constitution.

Our course is funded by the NHS so you won’t pay any tuition fees, and you may even receive a bursary.

All our nursing courses are approved by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). On successful completion, you’ll be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
