In 2014, the horse meat scandal kick-started and era of stricter factory inspections and a more food-safety conscious consumer. Today, manufacturers of consumables and foodstuffs around the world recognise that transparency about the way their products are processed is essential to stay in business. As an upcoming student of the Process and Food Technology (PFT) at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS), you’ll embrace this increase in consumer awareness. It will encourage you to innovate existing manufacturing processes, or design entirely new ones, to provide sustainable and resourceful food and chemical industries.

Companies worldwide are carefully reevaluating their production processes. There is a lot to be done: developing more efficient and environmentally friendly production process, creating smarter food and manufacturing more sustainable consumer products.

The PFT programme consists of two main pillars: food technology and chemical engineering. Themes in the first two years are water purification, sustainable food production, (in)organic chemistry, polymer science and technology (plastics and 3D printing). In year two you’ll be introduced to more advanced process and food technologies, such as fluid flow dynamics and reaction kinetics. PFT’s specialised theoretical framework, mixed with a variety of hands-on group projects, will teach you how to dissect the chemical composition of various materials and substances and teach you various techniques on how to improve them. Our alumni are highly valued by companies such as Dutch Royal Shell, Heineken, P&G, and Unilever for their advanced technical skills, multicultural communication skills and strong practical project working abilities.

It goes without saying that you’ll have an affinity with mathematics, chemistry and physics.

---------------------

Visi, kurie dar nėra pabaigę mokyklos ir į šį universitetą stoja besimokydami 12 klasėje, kartu su pažymių išrašu privalo prisegti ir dokumentą, kuriame būtų nurodyti planuojami laikyti brandos egzaminai. Dokumentą turi patvirtinti mokyklos administracija. Egzaminų formą rasi ČIA

You could be a process technologist working on a new type of recyclable plastic for Sigma Aldrich Amsterdam or GE plastics in Bergen op Zoom. You could also apply for numerous jobs in the FMCG industry. But as a young professional, you do much more. You’ll discover the culture at your company and what the profession does on a daily basis. You’ll attend meetings and company parties. You’ll also learn all there is to know about your market - the latest developments, the competition and what they do. Of course you can also continue your education worldwide at the master’s level.

The multidisciplinary nature of PFT means that you’ll be attractive to employers from all kinds of industries and many of the skills you obtain are transferrable to different professions.

What will you become

  • Operations technician
  • Food technologist
  • Product designer
  • Quality controller
  • Security advisor
  • Chief fire-fighter
  • Drug safety medical advisor
  • Process safety engineer
  • Production specialist
  • Research technician

Continue studying

You might, of course, be more academically inclined and choose to continue your education at master’s level - in The Netherlands or abroad. It’s important to note that bachelor students on PFT must complete a one-year pre-master’s programme before being admitted to a master’s level programme. The most prestigious master’s for chemical engineering and food technology in the Netherlands are offered by the Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University. Examples of Dutch master’s programmes our alumni have taken include Food Safety, Development and Rural Innovation and Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management. Outside of the Netherlands, they have joined Denmark University of Technology (advanced Chemical Engineering) and The University of Edinburgh (Management of Bioeconomy, Innovation and Governance). PFT graduates have also taken master’s in Finland, Denmark, England, Belgium and many other countries.
