Step into the world of food and technology. Learn how to develop new, healthy and innovative foods.

Food. We cannot do without it. It’s in the supermarket, at the station, in a farm shop or online. In the food technology study programme, you will not only learn how these foods are made, but also how to improve and preserve them. This study programme gives you the opportunity to think about the food of the future. About how to make food healthier, more sustainable, or just tastier.

Why Food Technology?
  • You study important issues relating to food: how we feed ourselves and the world in the future.
  • Your studies are fun and delicious. You see and taste immediate results!
  • A diverse range of subjects: from chemistry, (micro)biology and physics to dietetics and the marketing involved in making food.
  • You will expand your knowledge and skills through theory classes, work in a laboratory or pilot plant. You will add to your professional knowledge and network through internships, guest speakers and real life projects.
  • Lots of practice through guest lectures, company visits and internships at smaller local companies to large multinationals.
  • Friendly; the study programme fosters a close-knit community. Many students also meet up outside their studies, at study associations, for example.
Feed your passion for technology and innovation

You will learn all about food production. You will learn which molecules give food flavour, how spoilage works, what you can put on a label and how to set the selling price. You will also learn a lot about how to make food. Besides theory, you will take practical classes in laboratories, attend guest lectures, go on company visits and do internships.

Based on practice, you will learn all about nutrition, including the knowledge needed in the following challenges:

  • Invent a new protein sports bar based on local produce
  • Analyse and improve the sustainability of the soft drink production process
  • Make the production of baby food even safer
  • Make plant-based ice cream as creamy as ice cream containing milk fat
  • Turn production waste into a profitable dog biscuit
  • Launch a start-up with your new food innovation

Specialisations

Food Innovation Management. In the versatile world of product development, it all starts with an idea: can something new or better be invented? Then comes the technology: can you actually make it, and if so, how? Next, you explore the possibilities of large-scale production and market introduction. Research and development of new products are crucial to maintaining a competitive market position and responding to consumer demands. The industry is eager for professionals who know what is and isn't possible! This specialisation is offered in English in Velp.

Food Safety and Health. Healthy food is crucial for a healthy body, a fact increasingly recognised by many people. Fortunately! The industry is working hard to create products that are both tasty and healthy. The field of nutrition is constantly evolving: new products, production methods, hazards, and risks emerge at a rapid pace. Consumers have high standards. New facts about food safety and health need to be translated into legislation and regulations. To meet all these needs, specialists like you are required! Is this a challenge for you? This specialisation is offered in English in Velp and in Dutch in Leeuwarden.

Kastu feedback about the program after the visit

  • This program may be suitable for those who are interested in Biochemistry.
  • Those, who are afraid that they will be unable to study this program because of the lack of chemistry knowledge can still apply because they begin their courses of chemistry from the first level, so everyone is able to keep up.
  • Students work a lot in the laboratories and kitchen. They even have a sensory lab at which students can do tests/tastings with newly invented food.
  • VHL have equipment to evaluate food density, texture, and other features.
  • With the help of food technology, the vegetarian section at shops is now wider than ever and the food is tastier (f. e. options to replace meat).
  • The most job opportunities with food technology are in the Netherlands and the UK.
  • VHL have alumni group, with teachers and there are many companies looking for food technologists, they receive several offers each day, so the job prospects are great.

Anglų kalbos žinias gali patvirtinti vienu iš šių būdų:

  • turėti anglų kalbos pažymį Brandos atestate ir išlaikyti Anglų kalbos valstybinį egzaminą (egzamino rezultatas nėra svarbus, svarbiausia, kad jį išlaikytum)*

           arba

*Jeigu nori pasitikrinti ar tavo anglų kalbos žinios yra pakankamos studijuoti Nyderlandų aukštosiose – suteikiame galimybę laikyti Oxford anglų kalbos testą. Nors anglų kalbos testas nėra reikalaujamas, patartina žinoti savo galimybes ir kalbos lygį.

Svarbūs reikalavimai
  • It is highly recommended that both Chemistry and Mathematics are covered until the end of secondary school, but this is not a mandatory admission requirement. This means that if your diploma does not have final examinations in Chemistry and Mathematics, you can catch up on the missing knowledge with specific modules that are included in the programme. You need to successfully complete these modules in the first year.

After your graduation, the business world is eager to welcome you. During their studies, food technology students are already being offered jobs. The role of technologist is important and in demand.

After graduation, many students go straight into an interesting job. As a cheese maker or beer brewer, for example. Do you prefer inventing your own product as a developer, will you make it as a technologist, or do you have more appetite for a job as a quality engineer? The options are endless. Some of our students choose to continue studying.

Product developer

As a product developer, you will invent new foods and improve existing ones. With your technological know-how, you think up tomorrow's food, for example developing a new sugar-free energy drink. Wouldn’t it be cool to see the product you developed in the supermarket?

Process technologist

As a process technologist, you know how to make food, just like a brewer knows all about making beer. You know how to produce a product in a factory and know all the steps in the production process. If the production line does not yet exist, then you think about how to set it up. You are solution-oriented and are always wondering whether things can be done even better.

Quality specialist

Making food is fun, but also a big responsibility. Suppose you make baby food. That is big responsibility, as you want to be sure that the food you make is of the highest quality. Or lead to spoiled, unappetising food. As a quality manager, you make sure that doesn't happen. You know what the risks are, what laws and regulations apply, and make sure that nothing goes wrong or that problems are solved as quickly as possible.

Product expert / technical sales specialist

You are the expert on your product and/or process. Perhaps you travel the world explaining your processes or products, or you work as part of a research team investigating the functionality of a particular ingredient.
