In the international Bachelor’s program Digital Culture and Society (Culture Studies, previously Online Culture: Art, Media and Society), you focus on digital culture and media within our increasingly globalized world. Through different research angles on our online identities, community-building, and interactions with (social) media, you study how tech-driven innovations and globalization influence our way of living.

In this unique, international Bachelor’s program, you will gain a solid foundation in the dynamics of (social) media landscapes, digital culture, and art in an increasingly globalized society. Customize your program with electives tailored to your academic interests and career aspirations including options like an international exchange or a (research) internship.

Program structure and content
  • In the first year, you take introductory courses covering diverse aspects of media, culture, and society, in which you, for example, explore the foundation of (social) media dynamics, and comprehend how algorithms shape our digital lives.
  • The second year provides a solid foundation in the critical thinking and skills necessary for understanding the complexities of contemporary media landscapes. The focus builds on developing your research skills. You’ll also delve into your career orientation to map out your talents and craft a professional profile that aligns with your career aspirations.
  • In the third year, you will have the opportunity to follow different electives and a minor program, with the option to study abroad. You will conclude your study program by writing a Bachelor's thesis. Either in the second or third year, you can do an internship within an external organization or the Department of Culture Studies at Tilburg University.

What can you do with a Digital Culture and Society degree?

  • A (web)editor is responsible for (web)content. You create content, review content made by others, or a combination of the two. Not only do you critically look at the content, but also at the design. You may also have a coordinating role and direct others. As an editor, you could work with journalistic content, but also with content for education, marketing or public relations.
  • As a policy advisor or officer, you develop policies for organizations such as cultural institutions, municipalities or educational institutions. You, for example, can conduct a policy to make the cultural offering of a city more attractive and accessible to all residents. Or work on policy aimed at making schoolchildren more 'media savvy'. A different example is a communication policy to ensure an open dialogue between an institution and the public. You are closely connected to what goes on in society and therefore maintain a network within and outside an organization.
  • A digital content coordinator is responsible for developing content for digital communications. For example through websites, social media platforms or online campaigns. You do not just focus on the content, but also on the design and potential interaction you want to provoke. You create content, direct others to make content or do both. With a good SEO and SEA strategy you ensure that the content rises to the attention of your target audience.

Graduates go on to work, for example, at the International Choreographic Arts Centre, Debut Contemporary, Clipboard Media & Content, Leiden University, or Music Academy INHolland.
