The Paris Agreement was signed in 2015 to reduce human induced climate change by the year 2100. Major fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and chemical companies have taken the consumer demand for more sustainable products to heart and are becoming more efficient and eco-friendly. Are you interested in working in these fast growing industries? Do you have a talent for mathematics, physics and chemistry and an interest in meeting global demands for consumer goods in environmentally friendly ways? Process and Food Technology (PFT) at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) could be for you!

Companies worldwide are carefully reevaluating their production processes. There is a lot to be done: developing more efficient and environmentally friendly production process, creating smarter food and manufacturing more sustainable consumer products.

The PFT programme consists of two main pillars: food technology and chemical engineering. Themes in the first two years are water purification, sustainable food production, (in)organic chemistry, polymer science and technology (plastics and 3D printing). PFT’s specialised theoretical framework, mixed with a variety of hands-on group projects with industry partners, will help form you into a state-of-the-art food or chemical specialist engineer. PFT includes an internship and graduation internship period. Our alumni are highly valued by companies such as Dutch Royal Shell, Heineken, P&G, and Unilever for their advanced technical skills, multicultural communication skills and strong practical project working abilities.

In year three, you’ll have to do a minor. You’ll get the chance to specialise as a process and food engineer or develop more general skills by doing a minor on another programme. An example of a PFT minor is Food Product Design, which is taken with the nutrition and dietetics and industrial product design programmes at THUAS. You’ll focus on the development or improvement of new and existing products. For a non-PFT minor, you could choose Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Global Perspective or The Many Faces of Globalisation offered by other THUAS faculties.

It goes without saying that you’ll have an affinity with mathematics, chemistry and physics.

----------------------------

Visi, kurie dar nėra pabaigę mokyklos ir į šį universitetą stoja besimokydami 12 klasėje, kartu su pažymių išrašu privalo prisegti ir dokumentą, kuriame būtų nurodyti planuojami laikyti brandos egzaminai. Dokumentą turi patvirtinti mokyklos administracija. Egzaminų formą rasi ČIA

You could be a process technologist working on a new type of recyclable plastic for Sigma Aldrich Amsterdam or GE plastics in Bergen op Zoom. You could also apply for numerous jobs in the FMCG industry. But as a young professional, you do much more. You’ll discover the culture at your company and what the profession does on a daily basis. You’ll attend meetings and company parties. You’ll also learn all there is to know about your market - the latest developments, the competition and what they do. Of course you can also continue your education worldwide at the master’s level.

The multidisciplinary nature of PFT means that you’ll be attractive to employers from all kinds of industries and many of the skills you obtain are transferrable to different professions.

What will you become

  • Operations technician
  • Food technologist
  • Product designer
  • Quality controller
  • Security advisor
  • Chief fire-fighter
  • Drug safety medical advisor
  • Process safety engineer
  • Production specialist
  • Research technician

Continue studying

You might, of course, be more academically inclined than your fellow students. If so, you’ll have the option of following a Master’s after you graduate from PFT. The most prestigious Master’s in the Netherlands that deal with process engineering and food technology are at the University of Wageningen and the Technical University in Delft. Examples include: Food Safety, Development and Rural Innovation and Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management. Note, however, that different rules apply in the Netherlands, as most Dutch universities require that THUAS graduates follow a pre-master’s first. Outside the Netherlands, PFT students can follow a Master’s directly after graduation. We’ve seen for instance that PFT students have no problem applying for a Master in Chemical Technology at Universities in Finland, Denmark, England and Belgium.
