How can we secure clean water for everyone, everywhere? How can we use our wastewaters as goldmines for untapped resources? And how do we combat an ever drying planet? If you're ready to tackle urgent global water challenges through innovation, the Master's degree in Water Technology is for you!
✔ Study in a unique joint degree programme with 3 top Dutch universities
✔ Gain hands-on research experience at Wetsus, Europe's leading water tech institute
✔ Combine biotechnology, chemistry, and separation technology in one curriculum
✔ Address real-world water issues in a multidisciplinary, international environment
This two-year international Master's programme is a collaboration between the University of Groningen, Wageningen University, and the University of Twente. All education and research take place at Wetsus in Leeuwarden, the centre of excellence for sustainable water technology. Here, you'll work closely with researchers and industry partners to develop breakthrough solutions for water purification, reuse, and resource recovery.
The programme integrates core scientific disciplines to address pressing challenges in clean water access, circular economy, and environmental sustainability. You'll learn to apply your chemistry or life sciences background to high-impact topics like membrane technology, microbial electrochemistry, and desalination. Graduates are equipped for careers in research, consultancy, or industry — in sectors that urgently need new talent and ideas.
Students holding a bachelor's degree in the following are directly admissible:
General requirements for enrolment in the joint MSc Programme Water Technology are:
The study domain is becoming more and more relevant due to the urgent need for new technologies to meet the global water problems. Water technology for public drinking water production and sewer water treatment is a very large market. Further, the largest use of fresh water is for irrigation purposes.
The industrial water supply and industrial waste water treatment also represent a significant market. There is no question that business involved in water technology will grow tremendously. Besides this human capital is a basic condition to guarantee the success and continuity of the development of sustainable technologies and a European know-how economy in water technology. In many EU countries the lack of talented technological professionals is becoming an increasingly limiting factor. The program prepares students for a professional position in the broad area of water technology. Graduates have good national and international career prospects in business and research.
