Logistics and supply chain management is much more than just organising transport and systems. A number of factors are increasing the importance of logistics including the rapid growth of technology and the expansion of global markets, resulting in a larger number of companies with operations worldwide and a corporate stance on customer satisfaction. A range of management techniques, technologies, and IT systems are used to plan and manage supply chain systems and their logistics operations.

Graduates can find themselves working for companies such as:
• Caterpillar – world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines
• Dematic – the market leader in innovative logistics automation systems
• NYK Logistics – delivers fully integrated logistics solutions tailored to the needs of their customers and
• Tuffnells – leading parcel delivery company that have invested hundreds of thousands of pounds in state-of-the-art scanning, web-enabled proof of delivery and 'track and trace' bar coding equipment

Typical graduates roles are:
• logistics coordinator
• supply chain analyst
• solutions analyst
• supply chain coordinator
• demand analyst

With typically five years experience graduates move onto management roles in areas such as warehouse operations, supply chain, inventory and logistics planning.

A key element of the course is a period spent on work-based learning (WBL). WBL is a teaching and learning approach where learning is facilitated as a result of practical experience gained working on real industrial case studies and projects.

Benefits of this learning approach include:
• this is the way professionals learn
• it cancels the memorise, exam, forget cycle, and increases knowledge retention
• it develops transferable skills wanted by employers, such as problem solving, teamworking and presentation skills
• it provides an enjoyable learning experience that improves student motivation
• information sourcing skills are developed by evaluating and using suitable learning resources
• self confidence and an independent attitude to work and learning are developed

You work on industry projects during the course to gain work based knowledge, skills and experience. This allows you to apply your knowledge in practice, gain new skills and appreciate the workings of the industry.
